Watch Mumford & Sons Get Their South Africa On

Something tells me Mumford & Sons recently tried to get away from it all by taking a trip to South Africa, but as anyone who has gone to the country knows, it’s hard not to become completely immersed in the music of the nation. The result was a subsequent six-show South African tour and a new “mini-album,” Johannesburg, (recorded with Baaba Maal, The Very Best, and Cape Town’s favorites, Beatenberg), a five-song love letter of sorts to the group’s travels from Cape Town to Joburg, and a travelogue of the musicians they met along the way.

The unique mini-album was recorded last February where the group spent two days and nights in the studio with some of Africa’s leading musicians assembled by Swedish producer Johan Hugo of The Very Best, whom the band first met in 2010 on their Laneway Festival tour in Australia.

I was able to check out the show myself this week here in New York with a few thousand raucous fans, as well as visit the free pop-up exhibition at Okayafrica’s Okay Space in Williamsburg. The exhibition displays behind-the-scenes photography by the band and intimate documentary footage from their tour.

Visiting the pop-up yesterday was a nice reminder of my own time spent in South Africa. From the enthusiasm of the youth culture there to the vibrancy of the music, the visit was a great way to bring back some great memories of my amazing time there.

The pop-up will also feature live performances from Beatenberg, South African wine tasting, DJ sets and a host of live music and an evening of film featuring work of acclaimed South African directors, curated by Johannesburg independent cinema The Bioscope. Artists on display include Ted Dwane, Marcus Haney, Chris Maas, Ty Johnson, David East, Kristin-Lee Moolman, David Tshabalala, Dahlia Maubane, Andile Buka, Darren Gwynn and Paul Samuels.

The exhibition is open for viewing from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., with the events below running from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m.
